Social Studies with Mr. Betar

My Name is Jesse Betar and I am the Social Studies teacher at William P. Kimmel Alternative School.  In addition to my time at WPK, I am also a Social Studies instructor in the Altoona Cyber Program at the Altoona Area High School.  I am entering my fourth year of teaching in the Altoona Area School District, after receiving bachelor's degrees from Bloomsburg University (2011) and Mount Aloysius College (2016).  In the summer of 2019, I finished the graduate program at California University of PA to receive my Master's degree in Educational Leadership.  In my spare time, I enjoy working out, playing basketball and golf, and spending time with family and friends.

My Social Studies classroom provides an enthusiastic environment striving to bring history to life for the students.  In addition to historical facts and data, I encourage students to analyze history through their own individual perspectives and not only form an opinion, but strengthen their ability to articulate and present it to their peers.  Aside from history, the courses provided allow students to familiarize themselves with current social and political issues with the aim of creating independent, self-motivated citizens, while incorporating the positive influences of technology in the modern classroom.  The Social Studies department features students in Grades 7-12, and disciplines such as World Geography, American Cultures, Civics, American Studies, World Studies, Teen & Law, and Sociology.  It is my hope that through examination of the past and present, our students are better suited to prosper in the future.
